Moscow Orphanage No. 50
Who? Director Yelena Vladimirovna. 65 children aged 6 to 15
ROOF has taught in Orphanage No.50 since the 1998-99 school year. In the past, educational programs in this orphanage have been funded by the Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation (2000-01) and more recently by British American Tobacco (through May 2005).
History and Short Description
Orphanage No.50 has been operating since 1953. At the beginning of the 1998-99 school year a completely new group of 30 children came to No.50; the total number of children in the orphanage has now grown to 65.
No.50 is a well-decorated and spacious orphanage. There is a special room set up for the study of home economics, a good auditorium and a sports hall. Many of the children who live here also have siblings in the orphanage. The children are divided into 6 groups on the basis of their ages and maturity levels. The children attend different neighbourhood schools - some of them attend vspomogatelniye classes in a neighbouring orphanage,
others attend a regular school and some of the older children attend a professional school where they study a trade.
Most of the students are behind in school by at least a couple of years, thus it is very important that ROOF teachers work with them so that they can eventually graduate from high-school. There are rooms in orphanage where ROOF classes are held.
